Knowing the Source of the Voice in Your Head

Our minds are constantly on the move. Filled with thoughts and images that are centered around limitless topics.

Not only do we have to sift through the content we create from within, we must also navigate the never-ending stream of information that is coming at us from external sources. Things can get very crowded in the space between our ears.

Amidst all the chaos and clutter, have you ever wondered about the source of the voice that’s speaking in your head? Do you know whether you are listening to your own, the voice of the Holy Spirit, or that of the enemy, Satan, who works to distract us from living life under the leadership of God?

My mind is always on the go. And without being a good steward of the voice I tune into I can wind up feeling overwhelmed and overrun by my thoughts. Has that every happened to you?

Being overwhelmed by my thoughts is not just a result of running a business, managing clients, and starting a new venture all at the same time. If I am completely honest, how busy I am every day is the result of my choices, including my thoughts. I can ramp things up or slow things down any time I choose.

But things can get out of control when I start listening to the wrong voice. And that is the voice of the enemy, who studies each of us at great length so that he can trip us up where we leave ourselves open for attack.

The Bible teaches us that we must take every thought captive in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5:

For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds, [inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ. (Amplified Bible)

One big focus of the enemy is to distract and confuse us. To lead us astray by influencing our thoughts. That’s why it’s so important to be armed with the knowledge of God that He reveals in His word and to be sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit at work in us.

I have come to differentiate my inner voice and that of the enemy from the voice of God speaking to me by the mere nature of the state of my mind.

When my mind gets overly busy, or I begin to struggle to focus and stick to a task I am learning to recognize that I have been listening to the wrong voice. I endeavor to immediately stop what I am doing and purposely point my mind back to God. I call out to the Source Who brings clarity and calm back to my mind as I seek to only hear His peaceful voice and simple direction in the moment. By doing so, I am able to regain control of my thoughts and select His voice to tune into.

To accomplish great things, we need great power. And that power belongs to God Who wants to work in and through us so that we may bear good and plentiful fruit. With all that’s been going on in the world, chaos is ever-present. But chaos doesn’t need to reign inside our minds.

If you desire more peace, more focus, more simplicity, and more clarity of mind then I encourage you to ask God to help you quickly recognize the moment you begin to listen to a voice other than His.

He wants us to seek to bring Him into every moment, every decision, and every activity in our daily lives. He desires to equip us to be able to stand firm against the attacks of the enemy. It’s possible when we actively pin our thoughts to God through prayer and study of His guidebook for life, the Holy Bible.

Join me in being more vigilant in catching and redirecting our minds back to God this week — the only voice that will lead us to a life of victory.

Be salty, my Friend!
